Lots of Strange Brands pop up from time to time and some of them are great guitars.
If anyone can add any info then please do.

Matsumoku made Aria, Westone, Epiphone Japan (first series before Yamano), Westminster (distributed by Kanda Shokai), some Greco Fender and Gibson copies from the 1970's, Vantage, Univox, Westbury, Skylark, Lyle, Fell, Electra, Washburn.
Chushin made Jackson, Azumi.
Morris made Morris, Bill Lawrence, H.S.Anderson.
ESP made Navigator, Zep-II, Edwards.
Kasuga made Ganson, Heerby, Kasuga.
Guya made Guyatone and were distributed by Tokyo sound corp.
Tokai made Sigma and were distributed by Martin.
Chushin probably made Fresher and Camel guitars and they were distributed by Kyowa-Shokai (not Kanda Shokai) who also distributed some Jackson models in Japan.
Cimar made by Matsumoku, FujiGen and also in Korea. The Cimar guitars are not produced by Hoshino Gakki (Ibanez). "Cimar by Ibanez" were guitars that Hoshino Gakki (Ibanez) ordered from Cimar.
CSL and Antoria were imported by various music shops in the UK and are basically the same as Ibanez and some Korean models were probably made.
Profile were distributed in the UK, Canada, New Zealand and Australia and were made in Japan and Korea. The Made in Japan Profiles were probably made by Dyna Gakki.
The Japanese Profiles have Made in Japan stamped on the neckplate and the Profiles that don't have Made in Japan stamped on the neckplate are made in Korea with some having plywood bodies.
There are also Profile effect pedals from the same distributor.
Terada were made by Terada and distributed by Daion.
Harptone were imported from the US and distributed by Daion.
Chaki, Hamox, Mitsura Shinano, Tamura, G.J. Gould & Sons were distributed by Daion.
Joodee, Founder, Daion and Yamaki solid bodies were were made by Dyna Gakki and distributed by Daion and the Yamaki and Daion Acoustics were made by Yamaki and distributed by Daion.
Joodee, G.J. Gould & Sons, and others were built to specifications of small USA distributors (MCI Texas) and often had the same model numbers as their Yamaki counterparts.
Gaban distributed by Hukuhara musical instrument company and probably made by Tokai.
Gallan were distributed by Kyowa-Shokai (not Kanda Shokai) and probably made by Tokai.
Gession were made by Tokai.
Grandy were probably made by Tokai.
Gibbon were probably made by Tokai.
Maya and "El Maya" were brand names used by a Japanese Trading Company from Kobe called Rokkoman.
Pearl were distributed by the Pearl Drum Company. The Pearl logo font on the guitars is the same as the Pearl logo font that's on the drums.
The Pearl Les Pauls were made by Matsumoku and the Pearl Acoustics were made by Hayashi Gakki.
Cortez were made by Matsumoku and some have the same headstock inlays as the Pearls.
The Cortez name comes from Jack Westheimer who founded Cort in Korea.
Rockin' Robin were an American brand and were made by Tokai at the start and then ESP and Chushin http://www.robinguitars.com/history.html.

After a while all these strange branded guitars follow a pattern.
Music shops, companies producing machinery or whatever or business people would choose a brand name often with a Spanish sounding name like Gonzales or Fernandes and contract someone to make them and then they would try to distribute them.
They could just distribute them in Japan and get along quite well because the Japanese market is pretty big and they could also try to distribute them to other countries which would have been harder and not many survived doing it but of course Hoshino/Ibanez did.
Only a few of these brands have survived and some brands have been brought back by other companies after buying the rights to the brand name.
Also some USA and UK distributors would have guitars made in Japan with their own brand name like CSL etc.

Tokai have built guitars for many well known brands over the years. They currently build most of the Fender Japan solid body models.

Dyna currently build some of the Fender Japan models and also build some of the Gretsch models as well. They have also built guitars for Ibanez and Greco.

Terada concentrate mostly on making Semi Acoustic and Acoustic guitars and have made guitars for Ibanez, Orville by Gibson, Epiphone Japan, Gretsch and other well known brands as well. At their production peak (in the late 1970's/1980's/early 1990's) they were producing around 10,000 guitars a month using 3 factories, the Higashiku factory, the Kanie factory and the Shirakawa factory. Terada's output is now about an 1/8th of what it was at their peak and they are still actively producing guitars at their Kanie factory.

Iida made some Ibanez models in the 1980's such as some of the Ibanez Artist models. They also made Solid Body, Semi Acoustic and Acoustic guitars for other well known brands as well. Around the mid 1990's Iida moved most of their production to the Peerless factory in Korea which they also own.

Kasuga made the Heerby and Ganson Gibson replica guitars in the 1970's/1980's. They were involved in a joint venture with Roland for guitar synths in the late 1970's. They also made Acoustic guitars for Yamaha in the 1980's before the Yamaha Acoustic production moved to Taiwan. They went out of business in the early/mid 1990's.

Matsumoku built Aria guitars and Epiphone guitars for export in the 1970's/1980's. They went out of business around 1987.

Matsumoku made the old Japanese Vantages for some distributor and later on I think someone bought the rights to the name and started making guitars with the Vantage name that have nothing in common with the old Japanese Vantages.

I found this

They were originally made in Japan by Matsumoku. They built them from the mid 70's to the early 80's. These were the guys who also did the Aria Pro II line of guitars.
In the late 80's or early 90's, the Vantage line was bought by Samick. They did primarily super strat type guitars. Some solid stuff, but nowhere near as good as the earlier MIJ stuff.

Японские производители

Argus - Kyowa Shokai - Chushin Gakki

I remember this brand was so expensive as new brand in 1980. The Les Paul replica was over JYE 100,000
and stratocaster was like 80,000 - 90,000. They also offered the full acoustic like JYE 250,000.
It is very difficult to see the original model. However, if you could find out, this brand is "must Buy"
collection item. When I get it. Of course, I would introduce.
Argus brand is still handled by Kyowa. But they are offering only guitar parts now.

Camel - Kyowa Shokai

I remember this brand to produce the Gibson type replica Actually, Camel is sister brand of Fresher.
Therefore, Kyowa Shokai distributed. They have Les Paul, Strato and other Gibson's replica.
The position of this brand is top before Argus brand came to the market. I have the Start 72 type.
Camel brand guitar was made with good craftsman ship. I could recommend you this brand could be
good collection.

ELK

ELK was a famous brand for the Amplifier. In early 70's, ELK was only domestic brand for professional players.
They offered the several replica and original guitars, but not really good replica but very good quality.
Now, it is very difficult to find out proper condition ELK guitar.
I keep both Les Paul and SG model. These are quite good quality guitars.
I'm not sure who made ELK guitar. Probably, Fujigen ? Matsumoku ?, because the quality is really fine
even compare with other 80's made replicas.

El Maya - Rokkoman

EL Maya was distributed by Rokkoman here. Rokkoman is one of leading distributor here. They are currently
distributing the Acoustic guitars (both Classic and Western)
Rokkoman used this brand name in 60's. But they started to use this brand for the Replica probably
mid 70's. The famous model is 54 Fender Strat Replica. I own this model, but I would say it is so-so as
replica. The wood material is very fine.
We can see this brand sometimes on market. However, most of El Maya have the neck trouble.
I don't know the reason why. So, very tough to find out the good condition one.

Franmpton - Pearl Gakki

Framplton ??? Peter ? I saw this brand in 70's. Probably incredible poor sales. I got a friend at Pearl, But he never
as k to purchase even I was working for music store. Well, He concentrated to sell the Drums !
They offered Les Paul. Strato and etc... But these are less JYE 30,000 List price.
It was better replica compare with Pearl brand electric, but so far, both of them are student model.

Gaban - Fukuhara Gakki - Matsumoto Musical Ins. Union

I owned their Les Paul. They have the Gibson & Fender replica. Specially their SG replica is
very famous even now. The Japanese famous guitarist, Hisato Takenaka, used Gaban SG
replica when he was young. I think This SG replica should be over USD 1000.
I have a Strat replica now.

Gallan - Kyowa Shokai - Matsumoto Musical Ins. Union

This is first brand of Kyowa Shokai sales net work. Kyowa Shokai is a distributor & whole seller.
Gallan made both Gibson and Fender Replica at earlier stage, but not really good compare with Fernandes and
Greco that time. Later, the position of this brand relocated as a superior series of Fresher.
They made many many replica like Firebird and other Gibson.
I have a firebrid replica now.

Ganson - Kasuga Gakki

Ganson is brand Kasuga offered. I think they offered both Gibson and Fender replica.
Heerby should be high end model.

Guyatone --- Guya, Tokyo Sound

Guyatone is pretty famous from 60's. They offered both Guitar and Amplifier.
I remember they offered the tube amp like Twin Reverb. It was good sound.
The guitars, when I was Jr. High, mostly poor replica compare with Greco and Fernandes.
Later '70s, they started to offer Gibson/Fender Replica.
In addition, they made a special guitar for Rory Gallager. The name was Mallory and Glory.
I could not see these guitars on the market.

Heerby - Kasuga Gakki

Kasugi was established in 1935 by Mr. Ikko Kasuga (1910-89) who was a politician (originally Japanese
Socialist Party). He started this company by himself. I believe that company was ended in 1996.
I'm not sure why Mr. Kasuga started the musical instruments company. Well, My impression of
Mr. Kasuga was very strong mind guy.
Anyhow, Kasuga made a very good guitars like Heerby and Ganson. The late 70's, they offered
their original design through neck guitar as " The Kasuga" which I want to get someday.
Kasuga also supplied the guitars for Yamaha as OEM. I'm not sure which model, when. If I could get
more info. I would add.

R.K. Herby – Kasuga & Roland collaboration

This guitar was made by Kasuga & Roland. Kasuga made the wooden parts, Roland made a pick-up area. Almost impossible to see the real guitars in the market. It can be one of good collection JV guitars.

Hisonus -- – Weston Music – Chushin Gakki

Hisonus was started in 70’s for targeting middle/Upper class guitar player. The manufacturer is Chushin which made Grover Jackson recently. The price range is over JYE 50,000. For the Stratocaster Replica ST-650 use the white Ash body and Alnico magnet single PU. Hisonus is upper model of Gibbon brand. I have Hisonus ST. The sound is very dry and good tone even compare with Fender USA. Well, if you could find out this guitar, probably good value JV guitar
I have a Stratocaster as collection.

Holly --- Kiso Suzuki Violin

Holly is second brand of "Tomson". Maybe Kiso Violin made this guitar. I have a Stratocaster Model. The wood material is not Maple, Ash or alder. The neck was made by the Lauan which is very right wood. The body should be same material. Very light. The sound is also very light. No Bottom tone. However, as a guitar, it works well and looks not so bad. Of course, this guitar was made by low cost material. However, I feel it is very lovely guitar. I have a Stratocaster as collection.

Hondo --- Some Tokai made

Hondo is a musical instruments whole seller in the States, currently produces beginner level electric guitars and basses which are based on the designs of Fender and Gibson. Between 1974 and 1983 Hondo produced guitars by Tokai Gakki in Japan. These models are good quality. I saw several model is market. Tokai Made seems to be very expensive (well almost like Greco, Fernandes level… Hondo is not popular brand name). The current models are probably made in Korea or China.

H.S. Anderson --- Morris

This brand was started by Morris Guitar in 1973. Morris offered the own brand early 70's. This brand should be high-end class guitars. I could remember that H.S. Anderson offered the headless guitar. I have never seen the market. It should be very small sales. Most famous guitar is "Mad- Cat" which Prince played. H.S. Anderson exported the guitar for HOHNER, Germany as OEM base. Prince played HOHNER brand one. Also, they offered the model "Houston" which is pretty famous here as "Apple" guitar. H.S. Anderson offer the replica of Les Paul STD, Les Paul Custom, SG, Stratocaster, TV model, Explore, Modern, ES-335 and others. It is very difficult to find out the original condition guitar now. I have a Les Paul STD type. But the pickup, bridge and tailpiece are not original. The neck is fat compare with Gibson Stabdard LP. The Top curve is not like Gibson. The arch is a bit low.

John Bennet - Nakai Gakki, Osaka

I recently purchased John Bennet Stratocaster ST-500S. I have very good impression for this strange brand name guitar. John Bennet is old composer ? I don't know why Nakai Gakki people use this brand name. Anyhow, they offer the Starato, Tele, Les Paulm, ES-335, TV, JB, PB and
etc... Almost like full line products. I don't know which manufacturer made this guitar.
Pretty nice construction as replica. The sound also pretty fine. Maybe Chushin ? Matsumoku...
When Get the new info. I would update this.

Joodee - Daion - Terada Gakki

Joodee is a brand of Daion distributed. Daion is a brother compnay of Yamaki. Daion is selling
the guitars and Yamaki made a guitar (well, the presidents are real brother).
In 60's, they are only selling the acoustic guitars, but In 70's, they started to distribute the
electric guitars from the market requirement. Joodee is a first electric guitar brand from Daion.
Terada Gakki was established almost same time with Daion's electric guitar distribution.
Terada is well known guitar manufacturer for Morris, Gretch, Vesta Grapham and Fender Japan.
However, Joodee is their first OEM electric guitar for Daion.
I have a start and Les Paul STD replica. Both of them are very good quality. I guess that Tearada
made these with their best within the cost budget limitation. Well, Joddee is one of good collection item of JV guitars.

Kawai
Morris

Morris guitar. Most of Japanese guitar player should know this brand as a one of top quality acoustic guitar brand. I don't know how is their activity outside of Japan. Probably, Yairi is much famous ? Anyway, when I was junior high school (it is over 35 years ago), Morris has already offered Gibson or Fender Replica. It was very poor replica, I remember. After that, they started the H.S. Anderson to target high end users. Even now, they are offering the Bill Lawrence guitar here. Back to the Morris Brand electric, as far as I know, they offered Les Paul, SG, Strat and Tele. However, these are all not good replica. I guess that Morris sales dept just made their brand guitar because of request from music stores. Greco and Fernandes took over the market. The music stores haven't got a business relations with them, they just lost the customer. Therefore, they just prepared. They don't care how these are good replica or not. At the result of Morris Brand poor sales, they started H.S. Anderson ?

Orange

I could see the second hand of Orange Stratocaster in the market sometimes. Orange was started as an idea of the music store in Osaka, I have heard. Fernandes made this brand as
second brand. So, the real manufacturer is Kawai or Tokai, We can see "Orange" guitars on
Fernandes Catalog in 70's. Maybe, Fernandes distribute this guitar as sales strategic reason.
It is very good guitar, I would say, it is almost same with Fernandes.

Pearl --- Pearl Gakki

Splender --- Hitachi Gakki ? Kurosawa ?

I'm looking the 70's made guitars and learned the histary day by day. However, sometimes, I found out the guitar bland I never heard. This is one of them. If I felt that guitar is not JV,I would not take. But this guitar seems to be made in Japan. The consutruction is pretty good even compare with middle-upper class stratocaster. Don't know the detailed. If someone knew, please let me know. This is not Tomson or Holly Splender series.

Teisco

I must say Teisco is 60's brand. When I become teenager, we felt Teisco is already old fashion. They made many oroginal modelm but nobody use Teisco guitar around me. Actually, they made Les Paul, SG and other replica a bit later. But I think their sales strategy was wrong.
They are older Manufacturer comapre with Greco, Fernandes, Tokai.
I have 1 Tesico but it is 60's made. I'm not interestd in their 70's made guitars.
They made a huge profit in 60's. Management made a huge mistake on marketing.
Very regretfully, Teisco is not exisiting anymore.

Tomson --- Kiso Suzuki Viloin

Tomson I Japanese over 40 years old player should know this brand. This brand is for mail order on Japanese major magazine (for young kids) in 70-80's.
However, It should be only for beginner player who didn't know the Greco, Fernandes amd other brand in musci store, I beleive Tomson is just toy guitar.
Now, about 30 years past, I got 2 stratocaster of Tomson Not so bad ! I like them.
The neck is so fat as stratocaster. But body material is better than my expectation.
Tomson has a huge products range. They made a lot of replica. Holly is second brand of Tomson.

ссылка на сообщение  Отправлено: 08.02.09 15:49. Заголовок: Caparison Guitars

Caparison guitars

In the Beginning

Before the founding of Caparison guitars and Caparison DESIGN, Kyowa-Shokai(parent company) was contracted to by Jackson/Charvel in the US to produce Japanese production versions of the American made Jackson line of guitars.

At that time, all American made Jackson guitars were made in the custom shop and with the influx of Japanese import guitars from their competitors(Kramer, Ibanez, ESP), Jackson offered cheaper Japanese production models models made by Chushin-Gakki(the factory contracted by Kyowa-Shokai to manufacture and produce the instruments). The instruments produced by Chushin-Gakki while under the contract of Kyowa-Shokai are the now infamous Jackson Pro/Professional models that are highly sought after by Jackson enthusiasts.

These instruments were of exceptionally high quality rivaling if not exceeding their American made counterparts in terms of fit and finish(with the exception of hardware, as the design of the import models were contracted to use cheaper hardware). As consumers caught on the differences between the American made Jackson’s and the inexpensive Japanese made Jackson Pro series, sales on American made Jackson’s dropped.

In 1994, Kyowa-Shokai’s contract with Jackson had ended. Some say Kyowa-Shokai opted not to renew their contract as Grover Jackson had then sold the company, but I firmly believe that IMC(the company that bought Jackson) terminated the contract and the whole Jackson Professional product line in an attempt to boost sales on American made Jackson’s(in business/marketing terms, it’s called “Protectionism”). It is against standard business logic for a company like Kyowa-Shokai to not renew a contract for a product line that sells so well.

Prior to the contract ending, an employee of Chushin-Gakki/Kyowa-Shokai by the name of Itaru Kanno had developed an innovative new way of finishing guitars to enhance the lower midrange characteristics that many guitar players loved. This finish, now known as the FD finish nn the Caparison guitars, was first introduced on the Jackson Doug Aldrich model which was discontinued once the Kyowa-Shokai/Jackson contract ended.

When the contract ended in 1994, Itaru Kanno with the backing and support from the Kyowa-Shokai trading company started Caparison Guitars in 1995 producing guitars using new innovative designs conceptualized by Mr. Kanno over the years while building guitars for Jackson.

Currently, Chushin-Gakki produces the Japanese import line of guitars for Jackson as well as the Jackson Stars line of guitars for the Japanese domestic market. (The Jackson Stars line of guitars are on par if not better than their American counterparts. The Jackson models currently being exported out of Japan under the Jackson name are not of the same build quality due to contractual agreements).

NOTE: I believe Kyowa-Shokai still contracts Chushin-Gakki to produce the BC Rich line of guitars and I also believe the Chushin-Gakki custom/semi-custom shop is the one producing guitars for Caparison and then shipped over to Caparison DESIGN for finishing and final assembly. The basis for this assumption stems from the fact that Caparison states that they have two locations, namely the “Factory” and the “Office”. If you look at the website for Caparison DESIGN you will read the following when they talk about the office:

“This office is in the different place from the factory” -> Signifies that Caparison’s office and Factory are in two different places.
“For example move the body in the middle of the line of the factory to this office once in the case of the model Horus, and graphic work is done.” -> In the website, it shows a picture of two Horus bodies with the Snow Cloud finish. Graphic Work here, refers to the FD Snow Cloud finish.
“… after inspection in the usual factory is finished, all guitars arrive at this office, and it does the work of the final inspection and setting up again by the standard which this office is characteristic of.” -> Translation: ‘After the guitar is completed at the factory and passes the initial factory inspection, all guitars arrive at Caparison Guitars DESIGN for final inspection and setup.

If you consider that Kyowa-Shokai has a good working relationship with Chushin-Gakki and that Chushin-Gakki has proven to be able to produce exceptionally high quality instruments, it would only make sense to leverage existing business contacts and working experience by contracting Chushin-Gakki to build Caparison guitars. It’s likely that Chushin-Gakki only builds the guitars leaving the bodies unfinished so that Caparison Guitars DESIGN can apply the finish on them. Also, this makes more logical business sense as the application of the FD finish that Caparison is known for would be considered Intellectual Property of Mr. Kanno and Caparison Guitars, it would be best to do it themselves. This way, a smaller quantity of guitars with tighter tolerances(read: higher quality build) can be produced by Chushin-Gakki and still provides a small consistent flow of guitars to finish and setup.

Note 2: Although Chushin-Gakki produces Jackson, Jackson Stars, BC Rich and Caparison guitars, their quality levels are different depending on the specifications laid out by the contracting company. While the Jackson Stars are at the same level (if not better) than the original Jackson Professional models and Jackson USA models, I feel that the Caparison Guitars are actually slightly better built than a Jackson Stars J1 or J2 model. I’d have to say that a Custom ordered(not semi-custom) Jackson Stars is on par with what the Caparison’s. This is my opinion after having tried a bunch of Jackson Stars models to compare to Caparisons (part of my research study you could say)

CORRECTION: The Chushin-Gakki factory does not actually produce the Caparison or BC Rich guitars. Our friends over at JCFOnline have kindly pointed out that the Chusin-Gakki factory is located in Nagano and the factory producing the Caparisons is located in Nagoya(completely different place). The factory in Nagoya which produces the Caparison's should be the same factory that produces the japanese BC Riches though. Thanks go out to NC-118 for showing my the thread over at JCFOnline and all the folks at JCFOnline for figuring it out. Here's the thread just in case someone wants to read it: http://www.jcfonline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=78534

Note 3: Seeing that Caparison has disclosed publicly that their factory is located in Nagoya, that narrows down the potential list of factories to three.
1. The Terada (Kanie) factory which have produced guitars for Orville by Gibson, Epiphone Japan, Gretsch as well as Ibanez and several other companies. (It should be noted that Terada was once one of japan's largest OEM guitar manufacturer with a production output of approx 10,000 guitars a month between 3 factories, however only their Kanie factory is still actively producing guitars and their output has been significantly decreased to 12% of their former output)
2. The Ida Gakki (lida) factory which also owns the Peerless Guitar Factory in Korea and have made guitars for Ibanez and Yamaha.
3. The Kasuga factory which made Heerby & Ganson Gibson replicas in the 70's and 80's as well as working with Roland to produce the guitar synths in the 70's and producing the lower end acoustics for Yamaha prior to Yamaha's move to Taiwan in the 90's.
